SMG’s Favorite Commercials from the 2019 Super Bowl
Well that Super Bowl was… uneventful. With the lowest score in history and a half time show that was just kind of okay (minus the Atlanta locals, Travis Scott and Big Boi, hey!) the big game just wasn’t very big.
But we aren’t there for the football. As advertisers, we’re there for the commercials! We call it the Ad Bowl because that’s exactly what it is – an opportunity for some of the biggest brands to flex their creative teams on the world’s biggest stage.
Here are some that we really, really loved.
Dilly Dilly, they Killed the Bud Light Knight.

We didn’t see this coming. But the ending was a total win. Crossovers are a great way to get attention, and the surprise ending made it even better.
Stella Artois with Carrie Bradshaw and The Dude
Stop us if you’ve heard this one: Carrie Bradshaw & The Dude walk into a bar. But when they change up their usual for Stella Artois to help give access to clean water to someone in need, that’s no joke. Join them. The Dude abides. The nineties are back in a big way, and this spot is definitely on trend. Stella gave us a little bit of our beloved Sarah Jessica Parker’s Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City, Jeff Bridges’ The Dude from The Big Lebowski, and of course, The Most Interesting Man in the World, whom they pulled away from Dos Equis. With 3 characters so firmly attached to their signature beverage, they sent a strong message that Stella Artois is absolutely worth ordering.

If anyone would turn a dignified dinner into mayhem, it would be the NFL’s most lovable and notorious troll, Marshawn Lynch. This spot is gold. With an extremely impressive cast of characters and incredible direction, it made all of America laugh together.
The Washington Post’s Democracy Dies in Darkness

This one gave us chills. It sent an incredibly strong message in a time when journalists are under increasing scrutiny by both the general public and some of our political leaders. We depend on journalists to give us a fair, unbiased record of events around the globe. They not only risk their lives, but risk public scrutiny and ire to simply do their jobs. The Washington Post gave us a powerful reminder of that with this moving spot.
Jeep’s National Anthem

If someone told us that a phrase-by-phrase visual rendition of the National Anthem was going to steal the show, we would have been skeptical. But Jeep knocked it out of the park with this one. One Republic opens with the first line, then lets the cinematography take over until the end of the song. It was moving. It was beautifully done. We love it.
While we were disappointed in the lack of totally weird spots (remember Doritos PuppyMonkeyBaby?), we did enjoy the smattering of good commercial work this year.
They were definitely more exciting than the game.
